What To Do After a Car Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide
What to do at the scene of a UK road accident, what details to swap, and how to get your vehicle recovered safely.
1. Stop and make the scene safe
You must stop after any accident. Switch off the engine, put your hazards on and, if it's safe, get everyone out of the vehicles and away from traffic.
2. Check for injuries
If anyone is hurt, the road is blocked or you suspect a crime, call 999 straight away.
3. Exchange details
Swap names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and insurance details with the other drivers. Take photos of the vehicles, the road and any damage.
4. Report it if required
If you couldn't swap details, or someone was injured, report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
5. Arrange recovery
If your car isn't safe to drive, call a recovery service. We can take it to your home, a garage, a bodyshop or secure storage while you deal with your insurer.
